My Experience during the Independence Walk and Freedom Ride for Sarawak 50th Independence Day

Before start the Walk at Telung Usan Hotel Kuching Sarawak
On 21th of July 2013 (eve of Sarawak Independence Day), Borneo Heritage Foundation organized an Independence Walk which supported by NGOs including UVSB, Sarawakians and even Sabahans for the purpose of celebrating Sarawak gained independence from British in 22/7/1963 and telling the public about this “forgotten history”.  The Independence Walk was started from Telang Usan Hotel Kuching walked until Padang Merdeka, participants were shouting “Sarawak merdeka pada 22/7” all along the walk.

We noticed that many of the public from the street was shocked because most of they never know when actually Sarawak gained independence, some even think that Sarawak gained merdeka in 16/9/1963 during the Formation of Malaysia. After the Independence Walk, there was a forum at Telang Usan Hotel which was also organized by Borneo Heritage Foundation.

From the forum, many important histories about Sarawak and Formation of Malaysia which were not being taught in School were highlighted to remind the people. For example, Sarawak was a sovereignty nation (gained independence in 22/7/1963) that “formed” Malaysia with Malaya, Singapore and North Borneo (Sabah) in 16/9/1963, which is not a 13th state that “join” Malaysia because Malaysia was not exist before 16/9/1963.
