This is the first time ever in 50 years, an event has been organized to mark 22 July as Sarawak Independence Day. Few Sarawakians realize, but 22 July 1963 was the day Sarawak became independent again with the swearing-in of our first Sarawak Chief Minister Stephen Kalong Ningkan and assembly, our flag, our anthem and our Sarawak Constitution.

Our theme is “We Must Know”, and this commemoration is a cross-party event to revisit the genesis of Sarawak and the formation of Malaysia, to create a space of co-operation amongst Sarawakians and engage them in the discussion about the future of Sarawak.

Sarawak 50th Independence Day is to make our statement on our sovereignty and territorial integrity as one of three nations in the federation of Malaysia and not as one of thirteen states.

Invited speakers at the Forum include Dato Seri Daniel Tajem, YB Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan, Dr Awang Hasmadi Awang Mois, Dato Morshidi bin Abdul Rahman, Paul Raja and Peter John Jaban.
